Best Read Friday - Hidden Costs in Cloud Computing

SAVINGS OR NOT...
The flexibility and agility of moving from legacy applications to cloud solutions can be more cumbersome than expected if proper financial and resources planning are not in place.  The savings can be less than hoped for when trying to move everything to the cloud, especially when resources are not properly trained.

Check out this article by CenturyLink's CTO, Jared Wray, which provides a high-level explanation of what needs to be considered when moving to the cloud to avoid as many hidden costs as possible.

Magnify the Solution not the Problem

Magnify Solutions Not Doubt...
Meetings are held to discuss or devise a plan of action.  Contracts are awarded to entrepreneurs because of more expertise in an area.  New technology is only implemented because specific information needs to be exposed for decision-making.  New tactics for sales and marketing are  deployed because of a shift in direction due to stagnant or changing times.  Custodial engineers (formerly known as janitors) are hired to work after hours to ensure the cleanliness and decency of the office. In essence, most people go to work because they have been employed to solve a problem.  But what most do not understand is that magnifying the solution increases their value instead of reiterating the problem.

Discussing a problem continuously reflects poorly on the person initiating the conversation.  It demonstrates poor team spirit since the collaborative strength is demonstrated in the person who can cover for the weakest link.  It further speaks volumes to the level of forgiveness and tolerance that is not granted to others but surely expected in return.  Instead, the conversation should either cease or take a turn towards the solution.

For any problem there is a solution, either short-term or long-term.  The plan of action should be announced to all appropriate parties via an internal communication outlining what will be resolved with clear expectations on when there will be a noticeable decrease in the problem or its residue. This informs everyone involved that initiatives are in force to ensure those affected will not encounter a repeat offense. It further reduces the noise surrounding the problem allowing positive reinforcement for change management and adoption of the solution.

In all, there are noisemakers and peacemakers in every situation.  The squeaky faucet is never respected nor admired but the wrench is always viewed as the keeper.  Promote the wrench and tighten credibility by magnifying the solution that solves the problem.

Blackberry 10 - Loss or Win?

Blackberry 10

Enterprise Blackberry device customers all over the world have been eagerly awaiting a new and exciting one that offers the same security and user-friendliness with a lot more bells and whistles to the camera, speed, and availability of commonly used applications.  January 30 was our date to revel in the excitement of the latest version that was sure to increase market share and give the the iOS and Android markets a run for their money. Well from the looks of it, they will have a marginal win!

  1. The Blackberry 10 has a great type ahead feature that I will be sure to use because the Apple devices are not smart enough to decipher expected words, especially for fast typers.
  2. Blackberry also purchased and developed the QNX operating system which provides more security than it already had. Enough said for enterprise and government officials that want to be as hackproof as possible.
  3. The camera is by far better quality than its competitors, offering TimeShift, which allows you to take pictures in succession and use people's faces from any point-in-time without changing the picture. You can use the proper facial expression or the best smile at any time without having to retake pictures.
  4. The video camera is plain sick with its ability to make adjustments to light and contrast.  More importantly, it allows you to change the volume, modify the length, put different settings behind separate clips, and just be a video editor extraordinaire with little training.
Hey, I thought we were the forward thinking country and received everything first. I guess not since the UK received it last week and is giving rave reviews. So now we await the dates to purchase in the US to see if it really wins us over

Are You Techno Savvy Enough?

THE COMPUTER IS NO LONGER ENOUGH

Whether your workplace is a corporate setting, academia, or your own business, having a grasp on technology is a must.  Interoffice mail and the United States Postal Service is a thing nearing the past.  If it is not electronic, it is too time-consuming.  No longer are the days where you check emails once a week and expect for your peers, management, customers, or vendors to be satisfied.   You don't have to purchase every new electronic device but are some key ones that can increase your techno savviness.

1)  Make sure you have access to a computer, tablet, or smartphone to reply to emails at a specific time of the day.  This does not have to be the latest iPhone or tablet.  If you do not want to be perceived as easily accessible, do not associate a tablet or smartphone to the company's email system.  Use the company laptop.  If you want to consistently be interrupted throughout the day to feel important, set the stage that text messages and emails will be answered after or before meetings only.
2)  Be Your Own Hotspot.  Never rely solely on public Internet access to handle your work.  There will be times where it is against corporate policy to use free Internet access to VPN into the corporate network.  There may also be times that you are traveling and are required to locate that important document or create some deliverable on the company network.  All of the major wireless carriers offer hotspot devices for a monthly charge.  Clear offers the cheapest plan to date with no data download limitations.
3)  Remain Portable.  Never leave home without an external hard drive that is portable on a key chain or as a "passport" device.  There is no need to only store documents on a corporate network.  Save them on a portable drive that can be used on both MAC and PCs.  This is definitely where all of your personal documents should go as well.  WD and Seagate are two of the most frequently used ones that do not require formatting to use on both MAC and PCs.

It does not take much to be techno savvy so start today!
